Around Hatteras Island

Go to the Beach

The Shell Shack is conveniently located directly across the street from the Atlantic Ocean. Take an early morning walk on the beach toward the Frisco Pier and you will be rewarded with unforgettable sunrises and perhaps you will find a treasure from the sea to take home as a souvenir.  All the shells in the Shell Shack were found on local beaches.  If you came to fish, swim, surf or just relax on the beach it can all be done right outside your front door!
Explore the Sound

Spend a day exploring the shallow waters of Palmico sound. Depending on the time of year fish, crabs, clams, shrimp, scallops and oysters can be found behind the Shell Shack. Kayaking, kite boarding and wind surfing are all popular soundside activities as well. Be sure to wear water shoes as the shell fragments on the bottom of the sound are sharp.

Visit Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

If any one thing represents all of Hatteras Island, it has to be the famous black-and-white, spiral-striped Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. This is one of the most famous lighthouses in the nation, especially since it survived a precarious move in 1999. Now in the hands of the National Park Service, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is open to the public for visitation and climbing.
Visitors can climb the spiral staircase up to the top of the lighthouse for an unforgettable view of the Atlantic Ocean, Cape Hatteras and Buxton.

Day trip To Ocracoke Island

We are located two miles from the ferry to Ocracoke Island.  The ferry is free and runs every half hour during the summer season.  It is a really fun day trip.  Once you get to Ocracoke enjoy walking around the village and check out the local shops or just relax on the beach.
Unloading Catches at the Dock

For a chance to see the offshore boats unloading the day’s deep-sea catches, head down to one of the Hatteras Village marinas between 3:30 and 5 p.m. When the boats come in, the fishing mates unload the day’s catches onto the docks so the fish can be taken away and cleaned. Most days you’ll see something, usually yellow-fin tuna, dolphin and Wahoo plus some other interesting fish.
Museums and Attractions

There are numerous other things to do on Hatteras Island. The Frisco Native American Museum, the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum and the recently restored US Weather Bureau Station in Hatteras are all located only minutes from the Shell Shack.
